Nickolas Allen Yarnell, age 73, of New Albany, Ohio passed away peacefully May 23, 2025, at Kobacker House (hospice) in Columbus, Ohio, surrounded by love and his wife and daughters, due to complications from ALS (Lou Gerhig’s Disease). Nick was born June 29, 1951, in Warren, Ohio to Donald (Dominic) R. Yarnell Sr. and Kathleen Yarnell.
Nick grew up in Warren and Whitehall, Ohio, graduating from Whitehall Yearling High School in 1969, Youngstown State University in 1979, and Cardinal Stritch College (Milwaukee, WI) in 1988. Nick’s Electrical Engineering degree led him to 27 years of loyal service with Ametek Solidstate Controls where he retired in 2016, having worked his way up from Applications Engineer to Contracts Director. He was known for his intellect, his diligence, his negotiation/problem solving abilities and his strength of character.
Nick’s avocation was self-taught Wood Worker (as he would call it). This life-long love of wood and his math skills resulted in many lovely bookcases, tables, chairs, plant stands, decorative shelves, garden furniture (Carol Smith), outdoor bulletin center (Nottingham Trace Clubhouse), etc. If it was made of wood, Nick could design and execute it perfectly.
Nick is survived by the love of his life Betty Mittendorf (Brocious) Yarnell, wonderful daughters Teresa Brocious and Rachael (Sean) Kesling, “bonus” daughter Annette Collins, beloved granddaughters Brittany Brocious, Brianna (James Gomez) Brocious and Indiana Kesling, adored great-grandchildren Pierre Williams Jr. and Mia James Gomez, special sisters Gloria Phillips and Cheryl Ann Martin, and nephew Collin (Jodie) Yarnell, cherished cousins, close friends Richard (Carol) Smith and Bobby (Sue) George, and many other friends, prior co-workers and neighbors. He is predeceased by son Dale E. Brocious and brother Donald R. Yarnell Jr.
While not currently a member of a church, Nick accepted Jesus Christ as his savior as a child and always knew where he was going to end up. His family is comforted by that thought at this time. Thanks to everyone who prayed for and over Nick, he heard and appreciated every prayer. And thanks to the many visitors to Kobacker House, the staff was impressed by how many there were!
Special thanks to Nick’s care team at The Ohio State Medical Center ALS Clinic, therapists Connor and Anna, excellent doctors who helped along the way: Dr Ciaran Powers, Dr. Paul Eichenseer, Dr. Desmond Stutzman, Dr. Julie Holinga, and Dr. William Mayr, as well as CNP Sam Palumbo, the wonderful staff and volunteers at Kobacker House (from cleaning personnel to doctors – all top notch), our wonderful, helpful Nottingham Trace neighbors (you know who you are), and especially his daughters who helped shepherd Nick through this awful ALS journey. Prayers to everyone struggling with this terrible disease, may God comfort you.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Nick’s name to ALS United Ohiohttps://secure.alsohio.org/site/Donation or Kobacker House
