Margery (Margo) Fulmer - Class Of 1970

Margery Ann Fulmer - Margo

Margo was born September 2, 1952. She was the 2nd child of Robert & Helen Fulmer. Thomas Randall (Tom) was the oldest by 4 years (born 1948).

Margo’s mother, Helen, was a 4th grade Elementary teacher for Whitehall public schools, but her pride and joy was setting up the Library System for Whitehall. Helen also loved art and painting. She was big influence on Margo’s life. They both appreciated literature, history, other cultures of the world and the creative arts.

Robert had many various jobs working at Curtis Wright during the WWII. That is where he met Helen. They were married during that time. During his older years he worked as an editor of military manuals at the CDSC (Civil Defense in Columbus.)

Margo had a best friend who moved in a few houses down on her side of the street during 2nd grade named Valerie Bell. Valerie’s family had lived in Switzerland as a military family. The girls spent a lot of time in each other’s homes. Margo picked up a desire to go to Switzerland from the Bells.

Margo attended elementary school in Whitehall.
She graduated from Whitehall Yearling High School in 1970.

She received her BA from Wilmington College, a small liberal arts college, in Wilmington Ohio. While a student there she was a foreign exchange student in Switzerland. She lived with a family there and discovered the culture and food first hand. She loved to cook Swiss fondue and quiches from scratch. She got a Masters degree in Urban Planning at OSU. She enjoyed seeing the big picture of things. In Meyer’s Briggs terms you would say she was Intuitive and a Thinker.

Margo went to Youth With A Mission (YWAM) in Germany for a short time.

She learned about the Sisterhood of Mary. It is a protestant organization started by young German women who wanting to dedicate their lives to God who were heart sick over the extermination of the Jews by their nation during WWII. They wanted to be a repentant voice for that tragedy and be supportive of the Jewish people. Margo stayed at a branch of the Sisterhood of Mary in Scottsdale, AZ named Canaan In the Desert. She used her time there to make peace with her singleness and to put her trust in God for whatever her future may hold. She returned joyful and at peace.

Margo worked many years at the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) in Columbus, Ohio. She did stream management for Ohio throughout the state.

Margo attended the Redeemer’s church, where her mother was very involved also. She attended the Durly House group from Redeemers with Clemma Alcorn Snider and Diane and Ted Mueller. She was part of Larry and Jane Grindstaff’s Young Adult group at Redeemers. It was a very large, wonderful group and Margo had many happy times of fellowship at gatherings including retreats in the countryside.

She was part of the Maplewood Fellowship; a loosely formed house group from Redeemers that Mike and Susie Baird hosted at their home on an open door basis. The Hunters, Valasineekuls and Cottermans lived on the same street. For a while Scott and Jeanie Baird lived in a small house on Mike & Susie’s property. It made for a nice community atmosphere where friends all dropped in on one another.

Margo lived at Mike & Susie’s home for a while when their kids, Micah and Amy were young. Her housemates were also other young women who lived there including Lea Ann Lesher before she was married. Then, Margo and Helen Bake moved into a little rental home that Karen & Brian had behind their house on Maplewood.

Margo’s niece, Rachel Fulmer, has fond memories of Margo spending time with her and taking her places. Margo taught her how to make Fondue and quiche. Rachel is also very grateful for Margo’s influence in her life regarding the arts. Margo took her to the art museum and bought her paint sets. She helped her appreciate art.

Even as friends dispersed from Maplewood, Margo continued to enjoy fellowship with Mike and Susie’s life group. Brian and Karen Hunter bought land near Centerburg, OH. Bob & Lea Ann Lesher moved into their home beside the Hunters. Margo had nice times of community fellowship at the Hunter’s home as well as Mike & Susie’s. After attending Redeemers, Margo attended The Vineyard church on Cooper Road in Westerville.

Margo shared half a duplex with Mary Danimiller for a while. Unfortunately Margo contracted Chronic Fatigue Syndrome wile working at ODNR. It became more and more debilitating. Sadly, she had to resign from her job at ODNR. Margo eventually moved back home with her mother Helen in her older age.

Margo passed sometime the first week of February, 2020. We gathered on 9/20/2020 to celebrate Margo’s life and the nice memories we have… to share the ways she contributed to our own lives.
