Gaylord 'Joe' Hoisington - Class Of 1964

Joe died suddently on September 6, 2017.   On September 30, a celebration of his life will be in Warrenton, VA.

Hey Nancy ~ Please include Joe's military service information: Gaylord enlisted in the U.S. Army, underwent paratrooper training and served in Viet Nam. He was awarded a Purple Heart after being severely wounded and spent nearly a year in the hospital in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. A graveside service will be held at Arlington National Cemetery to be announced at a future date. 

1945-2017

Gaylord Winston Hoisington, 72 of Warrenton, Virginia died unexpectedly on September 6, 2017 as a result of complications from surgery for an abdominal aortic aneurysm.  He was born in Alexandria, Virginia on April 23, 1945, the son of Wendell E. and Marion L. (Collins) Hoisington. After his father was discharged from the Army, the family moved back to their home in Johnson, Vermont where Gaylord spent the first 5 years of his life. Gaylord attended schools in Arlington, Virginia, Falls Church, Virginia and Frankfurt, Germany, where his father worked for the U.S. Government. He graduated from Whitehall-Yearling High School, class of 1964, in Whitehall, Ohio.

Gaylord enlisted in the U.S. Army, underwent paratrooper training and served in Viet Nam. He was awarded a Purple Heart after being severely wounded and spent nearly a year in the hospital in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania.

 

He settled back in Vermont, where he graduated from Johnston State College with a degree in Recreation. He was an avid skier, and trained and judged champion field trial dogs.

After moving back to Virginia, he worked as a Soil Conservationist for the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission in the Division of Hydropower Licensing, a job he held since 1991. Gaylord switched from motorcycles to horses and began foxhunting with the Casanova Hunt. His passion for hunting reignited he became a Whipper-in and a member of the board. He was an indispensable part of the hunt volunteering for the many task needed to maintain the country and the hunt.

He was also a vital part of the team needed to put on the “oldest horseshow In the United States”  the Upperville Colt and Horse Show and the Warrenton Horse Show.

His ability to do nearly any job asked from plumber, electrician, and carpenter to equipment operator and the knowledge that he would do that job to the very best of his ability made him an invaluable member of the team.        

He is survived by his companion, Judy Phillips, his brother W. Dean Hoisington (Bobbi) of Sterling, Virginia, his sister Barbara K. Smith (Philip) of Santa Barbara and several nieces and nephews, He is preceded in death by his sister Faith E Handley of Ridgway, Pennsylvania. He also had a wide circle of friends.

There will be a memorial service at 4299 Casanova Road, Warrenton Virginia 20187, to celebrate Gaylord’s life on September 30, 2017 at 11:00 a.m.

A graveside service will be held at Arlington National Cemetery to be announced at a future date.
